Kolkata, 27 August: THE CBI on Thursday interrogated Bengal transport minister Madan Mitra, the second questioning in nine months since his arrest last December in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam. The last time CBI interrogated the minister was in January.

The interrogation today was carried out by two CBI officers at the SSKM Hospital, where Mr Mitra has been putting up since February this year due to alleged illness.

A Kolkata court had on 25 August permitted the CBI to quiz the Bengal transport minister in the hospital itself but directed it to complete the process in seven days.

Armed with the court order, two CBI officers reached SSKM around 12.30 pm on Thursday and the interrogation began around 1.30 pm. The minister’s lawyer and a team of doctors were on standby outside his hospital cabin and they went in intermittently to check on the minister throughout the interrogation

Emerging out from interrogating Mr Mitra around 3.30 pm, the CBI officers said that the interrogation was incomplete. “We could not complete the interrogation today due to paucity of time. We will resume the process again,” said one of them, without clearly stating whether it will be on Friday.

Sources said that CBI today asked Mr Mitra about his exact relationship with Paiyali Mukherjee, now dead woman advocate whom the Saradha Group had employed. They also tried to know if the minster was aware about Saradha money being invested in real estate projects of some other developers in his erstwhile Assembly constituency Bishnupur in South 24-Pargans district.

The CBI officials had to discontinue the questioning for the day as the minister complained of breathing trouble and uneasiness.
