Midnapore, 01 August: CHACHI-JI of Bengal politics, Congress leader Gyan Singh Sohanpal has been admitted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata in a critical condition.
A former minister and Speaker of the state Assembly, Sohanpal (92) was under treatment in a nursing home at his home constituency Kharagpur in West Midnapore for the past few days. He has been suffering from chest infection and kidney ailments.
With his condition taking a critical turn, grandson Harmeet Singh brought him to SSKM Hospital last night in an ambulance provided by the district administration. Sohanpal has been admitted to the Woodburn Block at SSKM and a medical board has been formed for his treatment.
Sohanpal, popular in Bengal’s political circle as Chacha-Ji, was first elected to the state Assembly in 1969 and became a minister in Ajoy Mukherjee’s Cabinet. He was the transport minister in Siddhartha Shankar Ray’s Cabinet in 1972.
Chacha-Ji has the record of having represented Khragpur Assembly segment for 34 years at a stretch from 1982 to 2016. He lost to BJP state president Dilip Ghosh in the Assembly polls held in May 2016.
