Midnapore: A civic volunteer has been stabbed by a suspected motorcycle lifter at Durgachak in East Midnapore.

The incident has taken place early today morning. The injured civic volunteer, Soumitra Mistry (30), is now admitted to Haldia Sub-divisional Hospital.

Amit Deb, the officer-in-charge of Durgachak police station said that Soumitra was on night shift at Durgachak C-Block last night. At the fag end of his shift today at dawn, the civic volunteer noticed that a youth was trying to break the lock of a motorcycle parked by the road.

He at once rushed to the site and managed to nab the youth red-handed. In the desperation to free himself, the youth took out a knife and stabbed the civic volunteer in the stomach. As he collapsed to the ground, the youth fled from the spot.

People of the area rescued the civic volunteer after hearing his screams for help. They took him to Haldia Sub-divisional Hospital.

Following the incident, police scanned the CCTV footage from the area and were able to identify the youth as Sheikh Jane Alam, a noted motorcycle lifter hailing from neighbouring Sutahata.

Around noon, a police team arrested the accused from a desolate house on the outskirts of Durgachak. He has been charged for attempt to murder. The civic volunteer, meanwhile, is out of danger but will have to stay in the hospital for a few days.
