Siliguri: After a prolonged wait for decades, the Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri is at last likely to start functioning from August this year.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today announced at an administrative review meeting at Uttarkanya in Siliguri that the Circuit Bench will be inaugurated on 17 August.

“We have readied all the necessary infrastructure, and the Circuit Bench, in all probability, will be inaugurated on 17 August. I will also remain present. It’s been nearly 40-years old demand of Jalpaiguri,” the Chief Minister said.

The announcement comes a day after the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and justice Nadira Patherya visiting Jalpaiguri yesterday to take stock of the Circuit Bench infrastructure readied by the state public works department.

The Circuit Bench buildings have been constructed on a site near Jalpaiguri railway station and the residential quarters for the judges at Jubilee Park in the town.

The Bench, once starts functioning, will be of much relief for the people of north Bengal as they will no longer be required to travel 685 km to Kolkata to file a case and follow the hearing at Calcutta High Court.
