Kolkata: The Coast Guard north-east regional unit headquartered in Kolkata has got a new commander.

Rajan Bargotra, an officer of inspector general rank, took over as the new commander of the unit today. He has succeeded Kuldip Singh Sheoran, who too was an inspector general.

On taking over as the commander, Bargotra stressed on strengthening the coastal security mechanism and focus on the upgrade of infrastructure towards supporting expansion plans.

Bargotra, a Flag Officer, belongs to the sixth batch of the Coast Guard. He is an alumnus of National Defence College. Prior to this new assignment, he was the commander Coast Guard eastern region headquartered at Chennai.

He has shouldered many responsibilities including principal director (logistics) at Coast Guard national headquarters in New Delhi, chief of staff of the Coast Guard western region, and commander Coast Guard district headquarters at Porbandar in Gujarat.

Bargotra is a recipient of the President Tatrakshak medal for distinguished service and Tatrakshak medal for meritorious service.
