Hooghly: The Government Railway Police (GRP) at Sheoraphuli in Hooghly have allegedly killed an accused man in the lock-up.
The charge has been made by no less than Abdul Mannan, the leader of Congress legislative party in the state Assembly. Sheoraphuli falls under Champdani Assembly segment that Mannan represents.
The deceased man has been identified as Amar Mahato (45). A GRP team had arrested him yesterday evening along with Nazrul Sheikh by raiding an illegal hooch unit near Singur railway station.
The duo was lodged in the Sheoraphuli GRP station lock-up in the night and was to be produced in court today. But Mahato fell ill late in the night and was taken to Serampore Walsh Hospital. There, doctors declared him brought dead.
As the news of his death spread, people from Mahato’s neighbourhood alleged that he has been beaten to death in the lock-up by police. Mannan too has echoed them alleging that Mahato has died due to GRP torture.
“There is punishment in our legal system for all sorts of crime. But beating an accused dead in the lock-up is unpardonable. The officer-in-charge should be suspended at once and a probe should be ordered,” he said.
Sisir Kumar Mitra, the deputy superintendent of railway police (Howrah), said that it is not yet clear as to what led to Mahato’s death. Police are waiting for the post-mortem report for a clue, he maintained.
