Malda: A prospective Panchayat poll candidate of the Congress has died in Malda on being run over by a speeding lorry. A Congress leader accompanying her has been injured.
The accident took place this morning on National Highway 34 near the State Bank of India branch at Jadupur under English Bazar police station jurisdiction.
The deceased has been identified as Babita Singha hailing from Maharajpur village. She was to contest the polls from Jadupur-I gram panchayat.
Eyewitnesses said that Singha was riding pillion on the motorcycle of Congress Entaz Ali to file nomination papers in the nearby BDO office. Near Jadupur SBI branch, the motorcycle was hit by a speeding lorry.
Singha and Ali both fell on the road and Singh was crushed to death by the lorry; Ali suffered critical injuries. He was rescued by local people and rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital.
Soon after running over the Congress candidate, the lorry driver tried to flee but local residents stopped the vehicle. Following this, the driver fled abandoning the lorry. Police have confiscated it and are have launched a manhunt for the driver.
