Siliguri, 23 September: A YOUNG couple has been admitted to the Alipurduar railway hospital in north Bengal with serious injuries after they jumped off a running train along with their 10 month old daughter to escape from drunken co-travellers.

The incident took place late on Tuesday night in the Delhi-Alipurduar Mahananda Express and the couple had jumped off near the Raja Bhat Khawa railway station in the Dooars.

The couple works in a brick kiln near Delhi. They are originally from Cooch Behar and were on their way to visit their native. They had boarded a general compartment of the Mahananda Express.

As all the seats in the general compartment were full, the couple settled themselves on the washroom corridor.

But their journey turned a nightmare after 15-20 youths in a drunken state boarded the train from Ghaziabad station in Uttar Pradesh. Soon the youths began harassing the couple by passing lewd comments.

The couple ignored the remarks all along the journey. But when most other passengers got down after the train reached New Jalpaiguri station on Tuesday night, the youths began to touch the woman.

Scared at this, the couple de-boarded at Hasimara station when the train halted there and are said to have reported the matter to the Railway Protection Force. With the train soon starting again, the couple boarded the same compartment.

Peeved over the reporting to RPF, the youths now began to directly threaten the couple. The woman claims that they even threatened to tie up them.

After this, the couple jumped off the train near Raja Bhat Khawa station along with their baby daughter. The area being located inside the Buxa Forest Reserve, the train was moving very slow.

The couple were rescued by a forest department patrol team in an injured condition and were taken to the Alipurduar railway hospital.

On asked by reporters, the couple said that no RPF personnel were present in the general compartment that they were travelling. Railway authorities have ordered an inquiry.
