Cooch Behar: A primary school teacher in Cooch Behar, held for alleged brawling in a drunken state, has died in police custody.

The deceased has been identified as Soumyadeep Chakraborty, a teacher at Pancham Prakalpa Primary School in the district.

He was picked up from Dinhata town’s Bowbazar area last night after police reached there learning that some youths were brawling amongst themselves in a drunken state. All the other youth’s had managed to escape.

Chakraborty was taken to Dinhata police station and today morning he was brought dead in a government hospital. Learning about his death, his neighbours and colleagues gathered at the hospital.

Dharmendra Singh, Dinhata unit president of West Bengal Trinamool Primary Teachers Association, claimed that Chakraborty fully fit when police picked up him last night. “We demand a thorough probe into his death,” he said. Police, on the other hand, are maintaining a studied silence on the matter.
