Kolkata: A woman in her 30’s, who is employed as a government lawyer, had to be rescued by police after her husband and in-laws allegedly assaulted her and kept her confined for hours.

The incident took place at Hatiara in New Town on Thursday. Acting on an FIR by the woman advocate, police have now arrested her husband. Her father-in-law and brother-in-law who are co-accused are absconding.

Ashima Ansar of Prince Anwar Shah Road in Kolkata married Md Ali Mondal of New Town in 2016 and the couple has a son. According to her, even since the marriage her husband and in-laws were pressurising her to quit her government advocate job and dedicate herself to domestic responsibilities.

But with Ansar declining to do so, the issue used to create regular feud in the family. On Thursday, she was allegedly beaten up by her husband over the matter and then at the instruction of her father-in-law Kausar Mondal was kept confined in a room from 12 noon.

Ansar somehow managed to bring this to the notice of a neighbour in the afternoon, who in turn, alerted Ansar’s parental family. Her mother and sister at once rushed to her New Town residence and asked her in-laws to free her. But they were turned away.

This made them approach the New Town police station and the cops went around 10 pm and rescued Ansar and her toddler son. All this while, she was not provided food by her in-laws, Ansar alleged.

Subsequent to this, she lodged an FIR against her husband and in-laws for domestic violence. Police arrested her husband in the night itself but others managed to flee.
