Kolkata: CPI West Bengal state secretary and former Lok Sabha MP, Prabodh Panda, has died of a cardiac arrest.
The 72-year-old Communist politician used to live in the party commune at the state headquarters Bhupesh Bhawan at Entally in Kolkata. His comrades found him lying senseless in the commune around 5.30 this morning. They called in a doctor, who pronounced Panda dead.
CPI sources said that Panda’s mortal remains will be today kept at Peace World (morgue) at Topsia in the city. Tomorrow from 10.30 am – 12 noon, the body will be placed at Bhupesh Bhawan for his comrades and followers to pay their last respect. The cortege will then be taken to his native place Midnapore for cremation.
Prabodh Panda has long been associated with the CPI. He was elected to the Lok Sabha thrice between 2001 and 2009 on CPI ticket from Midnapore constituency but lost to Trinamool in 2014.
Panda was made the state secretary of CPI in February 2015, replacing Manju Kumar Majumdar. Since then, he has extensively toured the length and breadth of Bengal to strengthen the party.
