Kolkata, 14 September: CPI-M has denied ticket to its former chairman of the erstwhile Bally Municipality Arunava Lahiri for the 3 October civic polls in the added areas of Howrah Municipal Corporation.
Mr Lahiri is under police scanner in connection with the recovery of Rs 21.80 crore unaccounted cash from the house of the civic body’s sub-assistant engineer Pranab Adhikari on 14 August. Police had raided the house of Mr Lahiri and his in-laws last month in the connection with the probe.
CPI-M has also dropped the names of Bally Municipality’s former vice-chairman Bikash Basu and councillor Pradip Ganguly, who too are under the scanner in the case.
Howrah district CPI-M secretary and Left Front convenor Biplab Majumdar who released the list of 16 Left candidates for the polls on Monday said that they decided not to field Mr Lahiri and the two others as their names have cropped up in corruption case. “Nothing has been proved against them yet but for the sake of probity, we decided not to field them this time,” he said.
Meanwhile, CPI-M has declared former state finance minister Ashim Dasgupta as the party’s mayoral candidate for Bandhannagar Municipal Corporation polls. The announcement was made on Sunday, following which Mr Dasgupta hi the campaign trail in yesterday evening itself.
Elections will be held on 3 October for Bandhannagar Municipal Corporation, Asansol Municipal Corporation, Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad and the 16 wards of Bally that have now been merged to the Howrah Municipal Corporation.
