Bankura: There’s no let-up in attacks on the opposition party leaders and cadres in the run-up to the Bengal Panchayat polls slated for 1-5 May.
In the latest instance, a CPI-M team led by Sujan Chakraborty, Left Front’s leader of the legislative party, and Bankura district secretary Amiya Patra, has been attacked near the Bankura Sadar SDO office today.
They were going to the SDO office accompanying CPI-M candidates who were to file nominations for the polls. This is because due to violence, allegedly perpetrated by the Trinamool, the candidates were not able to file nominations at the BDO offices and the State Election Commission recently extended the facility to SDO offices as well.
As soon as the Sujan Chakraborty led CPI-M team neared the Bankura Sadar SDO office this morning, several youths with their faces covered with masks/helmets and equipped with lathis and crude bombs stopped them.
The gang asked the CPI-M team to go back without filing the nomination papers and on being defied, launched an indiscriminate attack with lathis and rods. During this, the gang shouted slogans like “Mamata Banerjee zindabad” and “Jai Sree Ram”.
Policemen deployed in front of the SDO office did not intervene to stop the hoodlums, whom CPI-M identified as Trinamool workers. “Trinamool miscreants have attacked us with the active support of the police. They have captured all be it the BDO, SDO, DM, and SP offices”, Chakraborty, who was lucky not to suffer an injury like his party workers, later said.
In related incidents, Congress workers were attacked this morning at Kandi and Burwan in Murshidabad. State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Choudhury was leading party candidates to Kandi SDO office for filing nominations when the attack took place.
“Mamata wants to forcibly capture the whole of Bengal. Police are a party to this muscle-flexing by Trinamool miscreants,” Choudhury, whose team had to return without filing the nominations, said. He later lodged an FIR at Kandi police station blaming Trinamool for the attack.
