Asansol, 12 February: A CPI-M worker has died and 21 more are injured after crude bombs were hurled this evening on a CPI-M rally at Burdwan’s Raina allegedly by Trinamool supporters. The injured include a college girl.
Swapan Malik (47) succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a private nursing home in Burdwan town. Of the 21 injured, 16 are admitted in a Burdwan private hospital; five critically injured ones are being taken to Kolkata.
According to CPI-M Burdwan district secretary Amal Halder, their party rally was returning back this evening after having served a memorandum to Raina-I block development officer against the widespread discrepancies in the distribution of digital ration cards.
On its way back, the rally was attacked by raining crude bombs from a local college hostel on the outskirts of Raina. The CPI-M workers were taken aback by the sudden attack and 22 of them got injured.
“Trinamool student wing activists and some outsiders had taken position in the roadside bi-storied hostel and indiscriminately hurled bombs on our rally. As our workers tried to run to safety, they were attacked with more bombs from another building. One of the injured workers has died,” Halder said tonight.
Late in the night, CPI-M lodged an FIR at Raina police station against unnamed Trinamool workers.
Outraged over the attack, CPI-M Bengal state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra in a tweet has called for an intensified agitation against the Trinamool.
