Kolkata: A multi-storied building located on Brabourne Road in the city have developed cracks allegedly due to the underground tunneling work for the East-West Metro Corridor.
The eight-storied building where cracks have surfaced is located at 1/3 Brabourne Road, towards the rear of Writers’ Buildings. The ground floor of the building is occupied by the Syndicate Bank and the cracks have appeared there.
According to the bank staff, they noticed the cracks on a wall after reporting for duty on Thursday morning. They alleged that the cracks must have developed as work is currently on Brabourne Road and at BBG Bag for digging up underground tunnels for East-West Metro Corridor, which is to connect Salt Lake to Howrah.
Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRC), which is carrying out the project, has denied on record that the cracks have got anything to do with the tunneling work. They claimed that the tunnel boring machine has already cut through the concerned area two days ago; besides no other building in the vicinity have developed cracks.
KMRC has, however, assured the bank that they will repair the cracks as a goodwill gesture.
