Kolkata, 26 November: NOW noted theatre artiste Debesh Chattopadhyay has been robbed of his entire savings by cyber criminals.

According to Chattopadhyay, a total of Rs 67,448 has been siphoned off from his Canara Bank account post yesterday midnight.

“Two back to back text messages were delivered to my number at 12.07 am today stating that Rs 34,473 and Rs 32, 973 have been debited from my account and there was now zero balance left in the account. I saw the texts in the morning and contacted Canara Bank’s customer care over phone but to no avail,” he said.

Subsequently, the theatre artiste, who lives at Baguiati area in north Kolkata, lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. “Since banks were closed today and will be closed tomorrow as well, police said they would be able to investigate the matter only on Monday,” Chattopadhyay added.

Peeved at being robbed of his hard earned money, Chattopadhyay this evening wrote in a Facebook post in Bengali: “One cannot keep cash in hand and deposits in banks are not safe: what a strange darkness we are marching to?”
