Kalyani: The death toll in Santipur spurious hooch case has jumped to 11 and 15 more are now battling for life in government hospitals in Kalna, Santipur, and Kalyani.

Since Tuesday (27 Nov) night till yesterday day-hours, seven men had died after consuming spurious hooch, while 19 were hospitalised. Four among them passed away between yesterday night and today afternoon.

In the list of the four deaths is Chandan Mahato, who used to sell hooch at Santipur’s Nischintapur Chowdhury Para. Police had yesterday said that Mahato is absconding but this turned out to be wrong when his sister identified a dead body today.

Police and hospital sources said that the death toll may even go further as the condition some of those hospitalised is very fragile.

Meanwhile, the administration has taken off duty the officer-in-charge of Santipur police station Sourav Chatterjee for failure to check sale of spurious hooch under his jurisdiction.

The state government had yesterday suspended 11 officials of the excise department for dereliction of duty in this connection.
