Kolkata: Dengue, and the corresponding abuse of antibiotic to contain the deadly fever, has claimed yet another life in Kolkata.

This time it a 10-year-old boy from Salt Lake whose life has been snuffed out untimely by dengue. The deceased Narayan Shrestha was a resident of Duttabad in Ward No 39 of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. He was a student of class-IV at the private Salt Lake Point School.

Narayan was suffering from fever for the last one week. But since his exam was on, parents kept on sending him to school by making him consume antibiotic. The suppression of the fever through antibiotic without adequate rest took a toll on the child and he fainted on 28 August soon after returning home.

It was then that his parents admitted Narayan to a private nursing home on EM Bypass in the city. The boy breathed his last there yesterday midnight. Multi-organ failure caused by dengue has been mentioned as the cause of his death.

The nursing home sources said that Narayan’s platelet came down to as low as 4,000 as against the normal count which should be anything between 150,000-300,000 in a male.

The deceased boy was the only child of his parents.
