Siliguri: A senior doctor attached to a government hospital in north Bengal has been hospitalised after he was severely assaulted by relatives of a patient who died at the hospital.
The incident has taken place at Hemtabad Block Primary Hospital in North Dinajpur district. CCTV footage from the hospital shows that five-six men stormed into the room of medical officer Bipul Ghosh and apart from serving him punches, hit him with a steel trolley.
Ghosh, in his early 50’s, is now admitted to the Raiganj Super-speciality Hospital. He has suffered injuries in the head and arms but is out of danger.
The incident took place around 11 pm last night when Ghosh was on-duty in the emergency ward of Hemtabad Block Primary Hospital. Family members brought Tabeda Khatun (55) of nearby Choto Kantor village after she fainted at her residence.
On her arrival at the hospital, Ghosh conducted a health check-up and then directed a nurse to administer an injection and saline as the woman was unconscious. Despite this, when she did not respond, Ghosh referred her to Raiganj Super-speciality Hospital.
But before her family could take her out, the woman died. Peeved at this, relatives and neighbours of the deceased resorted to a massive vandalism in the hospital alleging negligence in treatment. They broke doors, windows, and furniture in the out-patient section.
Soon after this some five-six youths from among them stormed into Ghosh’s room and started assaulting him left and right. One of them even hit the doctor with a plastron stool and another picked up a steel medicine trolley and hit Ghosh on the head.
The attack could have led to fatality but for the relatives of other patients who rushed in and somehow saved the doctor. On being alerted, a team from Hemtabad police station subsequently arrived and shifted Ghosh to the Super-speciality Hospital.
The deceased woman’s son, Sabed Ali, admitted that the doctor was assaulted by his relatives and neighbours but blamed it on the doctor himself. “The doctor and the hospital staff did not treat my mother properly and this led to her death. Following this our people lost their cool,” Ali said.
Hemtabad Block Primary Hospital authorities have lodged an FIR for the assault on the doctor. Police are yet to arrest anyone.
