Kolkata, 17 March: NOTED physician Dr Subrata Maitra has passed away at Belle Vue Clinic in central Kolkata this afternoon. He had been battling cancer for over a year now and had undergone treatment at the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai.
He was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic on 14 March after his condition turned critical. According to sources at the private hospital, Maitra breathed his last around 3 pm this afternoon.
Maitra was one of the celebrated general physicians in Kolkata and several powerful people, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee used to consult him on health issues.
Maitra was the doctor who had treated legendary Bengali actress late Suchitra Sen for about seven years from 2007 to 2014 when the latter passed away.
West Bengal government had conferred the Banga Bhusan award on Maitra in 2015 for his contributions to the state’s healthcare. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed shock at the demise of Maitra and has extended her condolences to his bereaved family.
