Kolkata: A dead rubber in the ongoing Durand Cup today 17 August turned out to be one of the most interesting matches of the tournament!

Having already got eliminated in the group stage, Jamshedpur FC and Bengaluru FC faced each other at the Salt Lake Stadium this afternoon desperate for a victory to sign off.

Barely two minutes into the match, Vimal Kumhar netted a goal by a simple tap in, giving Jamshedpur a 1:0 lead.

Bengaluru FC consolidated their attack but every time the ball invariably hit the crossbar. They finally got a breakthrough in the 45th minute, when Leon Augustine scored the much-needed equaliser.

In the second half, Jamshedpur struck again, in the 52nd minute, this time off the boots of Aakash Dave. It furthered the lead in the 80th minute when Nabin Rana scored Jamshedpur’s third goal.

After 90 minutes of play, when a few extra minutes were added as injury-time, the spectators were almost certain that Jamshedpur would end victorious.

But things changed dramatically within a few seconds as Bengaluru’s Leon Augustine was dashed down by Billu Teli inside the box. The referee awarded Bengaluru a penalty and Suresh Singh Wangjam made no mistake in converting that in the 92nd minute.

The scoreboard still read 3: 2 in favour of Jamshedpur. Moments later, Leon was again dashed down inside the box, this time by Jamshedpur goalie Amrit Gope.

Bengaluru was awarded yet another penalty. Suresh scored again in the 94th minute, thus leveling the score in a thrilling battle. A couple of seconds later, when the final whistle blew, the scoreboard displayed 3:3.

This notwithstanding, the campaign for both the teams in this Durand Cup ended today.

In the first seminal of the tournament on 21 August, East Bengal will meet Gokulam Kerala FC. The match is at Salt Lake Stadium from 3 pm.

Meanwhile, the group match between Chennaiyin FC and Tiddim Road Athletic Union (Trau), which was adjourned at Howrah Stadium yesterday due to heavy rain and lightning, has finally been abandoned today under force majeure.

This after a resumption of the match scheduled at the same venue at 10 am today could not happen due to incessant rain. Both the teams have been awarded one point each. This made Gokulam Kerala FC easily walk into the semis with six points.

However, in the final group matches of the tournament tomorrow 18 August, Chennaiyin FC will meet Air Force at the Mohun Bagan Ground, and Gokulam Kerala FC will face Trau at Salt Lake Stadium Training Ground-II. Both the matches are from 3 pm.
