Cooch Behar: Turning down the BJP’s demand for re-poll in 339 booths, Election Commission of India (EC) has ordered re-poll only in one booth in Cooch Behar constituency.

The Left Front had also demanded re-poll in 63 booths in the seat.

The allegations of both the BJP and the Left were that Trinamool had resorted to false voting in all these booths during the first phase of Lok Sabha polls held on 11 April in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar constituencies.

But according to an EC order issued today 24 April, re-poll will be taken only in one polling booth, that is, No 181 at Bhogdabri Aided Primary School at Sitalkuchi. The re-poll will be on 29 April together with the fourth phase of polls in eight Lok Sabha constituencies.

During the 11 April vote, the presiding officer of booth No 181 had commenced the polling without erasing the record of the mock-poll. This made the EC cancel the polling conducted that day.

EC sources said that taking cognisance of the demands by the BJP and the Left Front, special observer Ajay V Nayak had re-checked the scrutiny papers for Cooch Behar and Alipurduar seats. He also went through the reports of the general and police observers.

However, Nayak did not come across anything that could substantiate the allegations of rigging and hence, the demands have been rejected.
