Kolkata: Eight electrical department staff of Eastern Railway have suffered grievous burn injuries while carrying out maintenance work at Ranaghat Car Shed in Nadia.
They are now admitted to the Ranaghat State General Hospital and, will be relocated to the BR Singh Hospital of the railway at Sealdah by a special medical van.
The mishap occurred around 1 pm today when the eight staff were working on the over-head electric (OHE) apparatus of a rake using a ladder. The somehow came in contact with the 24,000-volt overhead power supply cable.
Railway doctors administered them initial treatment at the spot and then moved them to Ranaghat State General Hospital. Senior officers of Eastern Railway’s Sealdah Division have rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
On 24 November, national level badminton champion Trinakur Nag (25) had suffered burns at the Narkeldanga Car Shed in Kolkata which belongs to the same Sealdah Division and, died two days later.
Nag was a grade IV railway employee and had come in contact with 24,000-volt power cable while working on an OHE.
Today’s incident at Ranaghat is the second such mishap in less than two months and, could be indicative of lapse in safety measures in the car sheds of Sealdah rail division.
