Kolkata: An elderly widow, out on her routine morning stroll, was robbed of her gold ornaments right in front of her residence at Behala Parnasree.
The robbed octogenarian Rekharani Basu lives with her sons and their families in a building at Parnasree. The woman walks with the support of a stick but still goes out on a stroll every morning.
Like other days, today too she went out on a stroll around 5.30 am. After about 20-minutes stroll, she was returning along Gopal Mishra Road that runs in front of her house that a youth with his face covered with a gamcha (cotton towel) pushed her to the ground.
The youth, who was on cycle, then forcibly removed a pair of gold bangles from her hands and snatched the gold chain that she was wearing. “I shouted out for help but being early in the morning none was nearby to come to my rescue. The youth fled with the gold ornaments that weighed around two bhoris,” she said.
The happened barely a few metres from her residence. She managed to walk back to her house despite suffering a bruise in her left palm and alerted her family members. A daughter-in-law subsequently found at the spot a gold locket that was attached to the chain.
The woman’s son has lodged an FIR at Parnasree police station but none is yet to be netted for the crime. Going by the nature of the crime, police believe the snatcher lives somewhere nearby and is well acquainted with the morning walk routine of the elderly lady.
