Kolkata: Police have arrested a fake doctor from south Kolkata who had been practicing medicine for the last 23 years.
The arrest came yesterday following a tip-off. Police have identified the accused as Sadhan Goswami, who was running a private chamber at Moor Avenue under Regent Park police station off Tollygunge.
According to police, Goswami despite having no medical qualification was practicing as a general physician since 1995. He opened the chamber at Moor Avenue in 2009 and was seeing patients from the surrounding areas like Regent Park, Kudghat, Netaji Nagar, Ashok Nagar, etc.
However, when the police undertook a statewide drive against fake doctors, Goswami sensed danger and went into hiding by temporarily closing down the chamber. With the matter settling down, he reopened the chamber in March this year and started seeing patients like before.
Regent Park police station got a tip-off about him a few days ago. This made the police collect his registration number and send the same to the Medical Council of India and the West Bengal Medical Council for verification.
The verification reports reached the police yesterday wherein the registration number was stated fake. Thus, police arrested Goswami last night itself. He was produced at the Alipore court during the day.
