Asansol/Kolkata: The father and the elder brother of a young girl have been arrested from Kolkata for killing her in the name of community honour.

This is because the girl had fallen in love with a boy from another community and was adamant to marry and settle down with him. The arrested duo has confessed to the crime.

Deceased Jahana Khatun (19) was a resident of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. She lived there with her mother and other family members. Her father Muhammad Mushtaq alias Mustafa and elder brother Muhammad Jahid live at Park Circus in Kolkata. They drive taxis for a living.

Jahana fell in love with a neighbourhood Hindu youth named Karan Kumar, who is now based in Mumbai in connection with his profession. The two sensed that their families would not approve of the relationship, especially when a political campaign over alleged Love Jihad has vitiated the Hindu-Muslim social relationship.

Thus, Karan and Jahana eloped in July. But about 25-days later, Jahana’s family tracked them down and forcibly brought her back.

According to her elder brother Jahid as soon as they returned to their native village, members of their community asked them to marry off Jahana to somewhere outside. Failing this, their family would be ostracised.

This made the family decide to bring Jahana to Kolkata in the hope that the strict vigil and distance would alienate her from Karan. They also had plans to find a bridegroom for her here in Kolkata.

However, after a few days, Jahana’s father and brother realised that this was not working. Her father Mushtaq particularly had apprehensions that even if they marry off Jahana to someone else, she will flee after a few days and return to Karan in Mumbai.

Thus, on 31 August evening, on the pretext of taking her back to Muzaffarpur native village, the father-brother duo set out in a car with Jahana. Brother Jahid was driving the car. Jahana sensed that the plan could be something else and secretly scribbled two mobile numbers on her body.

Midway into the journey, Mushtaq strangulated Jahana in the car with a rope. Next, the drove the car at an isolated place on Durgapur Expressway and threw her body near a paddy field at Nabagram village. To hide her identity, her father then smashed her face with a bolder.

On dumping the body, the father-son returned to Kolkata and got back to their usual business from the next morning. Meanwhile, that morning itself, that is, 1 September, the people of Nabagram village spotted the dead body and informed the police. Cops retrieved the dead body and sent for post-mortem to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

During the post-mortem, a medical assistant came across the two mobile numbers scribbled on the dead body. He passed on the numbers to the police.

One of the numbers turned out to be that of Jahana’s boyfriend Karan. A police team from Burdwan went to Mumbai and showed him the photograph of Jahana’s dead body. The photograph left Karan shattered and he told police that Jahana’s father and brother had taken her to Kolkata. He told police that they must have murdered Jahana.

The police team came back to Kolkata and picked up Mushtaq and Jahid from Park Circus area on Sunday (9 September) night. In the face of the grilling for nearly 24-hours, the duo eventually broke down before the police and confessed to having killed Jahana.

Police arrested the father-brother duo last night for the brutal murder. They were produced in Burdwan district court today. During the production, Mushtaq told reporters that he had no choice but to kill Jahana as she was adamant of marrying the youth from another community.
