Siliguri, 12 October: FIVE days since Bharati Tamang was suspended by her party as president of the All India Gorkha League (AIGL), her son and Trinamool leader Sanjog Tamang has now lodged a police complaint alleging that AIGL general secretary Pratap Khatai plotted to assassin his mother.

“Khati had plotted to assassin my mother and AIGL vice-president Laxman Pradhan while they were on their way to attend the state convened all-party meeting in Siliguri on 12 September. He ordered a trusted aide to vandalise the car in which my mother was travelling and had even instructed that if there comes a chance she should be killed,” Sanjog alleged at a Press conference at Siliguri Journalists’ Club today.

Sanjog played an audio clip wherein Khati was purportedly giving out the instruction to his trusted aide. Sanjog said that he had obtained the audio clip from a source.

“Given this, I have now lodged a complaint at Jor Bangla police station against Khati. I have also urged the Chief Minister to ensure that we get justice,” he said.

Sanjog’s father and Bharati’s husband Madan Tamang was assassinated in Darjeeling in broad day in 2010 and several Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders are accused in the case. Senior Tamang was the president of AIGL then.

Sanjog today also questioned the suspension of his mother and Laxman Pradhan from AIGL. “All powers in AIGL are vested in its president and the general secretary cannot function independently. After my father was killed, my mother steered the party through turbulent times. We do not accept her suspension.”

Khati had on 8 October announced the suspension of Bharati Tamang from AIGL for three months for attending the state government convened meeting in Siliguri without the consent of the party. Along with her, Laxman Pradhan was suspended for six years.

Responding to Sanjog’s allegations, Khati today said that since the former has approached police, let the law take its own course.
