Cooch Behar: Suren Roy of Alipurduar, who had yesterday accused surgeon Tarun Paul of Cooch Behar of having stolen his kidney during a stone removal surgery, has lodged an FIR against the surgeon.

Roy lodged the FIR at Kotwali police station in Cooch Behar today. In the FIR, the man in his late 40’s has mentioned that surgeon Paul performed a kidney stone removal surgery on his last year in September. But during this, the surgeon allegedly removed his right kidney without his consent and did not inform him about this even later.

As the pain in his lower abdomen was not subsiding, Roy got a sonography done last month and this revealed that one of his kidneys is missing. Shocked by the discovery, Roy lodged a written complaint with the Cooch Behar district magistrate yesterday as police were initially reluctant to register an FIR.

Nirmal Maji, chairman of the West Bengal Assembly’s Standing Committee on Health, who was in Cooch Behar today, has said that the complaint is being treated seriously. The district chief medical officer of health has been directed to conduct a separate probe, he informed.

Accused surgeon Paul, however, is maintaining a studied silence. In 2012, the same surgeon was slapped with a huge amount of fine by the Cooch Behar district consumer forum over the death of a renal patient due to his alleged negligence. Paul challenged the same in the state consumer forum and got the order quashed.
