Asansol: A fire broke out at Asansol railway station in West Burdwan district tonight.
The fire started on the ground floor of the station building around 9.30 pm and soon thick smoke engulfed the premises. It is a storeroom of railway documents and manuals from where the fire started.
The fire triggered a panic among the passengers as the main entrance to the station is close to the fire spot.
Two fire-tenders reached the station within a few minutes of the fire and the fire-fighter managed to douse the flames in about 30 minutes. Fire service officials said the building has suffered partial damage in the fire but it could have wreaked havoc but for the timely intervention.
It is suspected that an electrical short-circuit caused the fire but an official confirmation is awaited. Asansol railway station comes under Kolkata-headquartered Eastern Railway.
