Siliguri, 06 April: A fire broke out in the engine of Sealdah-bound Kanchan Kanya Express this evening while the train was approaching Bagrakote railway station in the Dooars.
The train had originated from Alipurduar Junction station at 04 in the afternoon after crossing New Mal station around 7 pm, the driver noticed fire in the undercarriage of the engine.
Following this, the driver applied emergency brake and stopped the train near Bagrakote railway station. Subsequently, the engine was delinked from the rest of the train and was driven to a safe distance.
On being informed, two fire-tenders rushed in to the spot. But even before they arrived, railway staff doused the flames using fire extinguisher. After remaining stranded for over half-an-hour, the train left for onward journey with a new engine being attached to it.
Railway sources said that the fire started probably due a malady in the train’s breaking system that caused friction. No staff or passenger was hurt in the incident.
