Siliguri, 28 September: WITH only four days to go for the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) polls on 3 October, the police in Siliguri arrested four miscreants with firearms and ammunition in the wee hours on Monday.

Of the four arrested, Ganesh Sharma (48), is a resident of Munger in Bihar. The remaining three ~ Manik Debnath, John Ekka and Shambhu Baraik hail from Belakoba in Jalpaiguri and the Dooars.

The arms seized from them include one improvised 9 mm pistol, two 7.65 mm pistols, five magazines and 20 rounds of live bullets.

Additional deputy commissioner of Siliguri Police’s detective department Amlan Ghosh said that the quarter was nabbed on the basis of a tip off from a place under Bhaktinagar police station.

“Ganesh came to Siliguri from Munger to sell the firearms to the three persons. We have got some inputs about their other accomplices and further investigation is on,” Ghosh said.

The police did not officially say as to why the gang was procuring the firearms but sources have not ruled the possibility of an election link. “The arms were probably being procured to create trouble in the Matigara-Naxalbari area during the 3 October polls. But we are lucky to have seized them before hand,” an officer said.
