Kolkata, 25 October: AFTER battling it for five days in the intensive care unit of a south Kolkata nursing home, noted Bengali film, television and theatre actor Pijush Ganguly has succumbed to the injuries that he had sustained in a road accident on 20 October afternoon.
Fifty year old Ganguly breathed his last around 2.55 am this morning at the Belle Vue Multispecialty Clinic at Minto Park. Doctors said that multi-organ failure was the immediate cause of his death.
Ganguly is survived by wife Pamela Ganguly and a son.
A post-mortem was performed on his body at Calcutta Medical College early this morning and then his last remains were taken to his Behala house around 1 pm where education minister Partha Chatterjee and CPI-M leader Shyamal Chakraborty paid their last respect along with others.
His body has now been taken to Technician Studio at Tollygunge for his fraternity members to pay their last tribute. The cremation will take place at the Keoratala Crematorium later this afternoon.
In her condolence message Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that she was very saddened by the untimely demise of actor Ganguly. “This is a great loss to Bengali film industry. In recognition of his versatile acting career, the state government had conferred him with Tele Award in 2014 and Sangeet Award in 2015,” Banerjee said in an official statement.
Ganguly was driving a sedan on the Kona Expressway on 20 October afternoon with dancer Malabika Sen seated next to him. A speeding lorry hit their car from the front near Satragachi Bridge, injuring both of them.
They were first admitted to the Howrah district hospital and were relocated to Belle Vue that very evening. Ganguly was soon admitted to the intensive care unit as he had suffered grave injuries in his head and leg.
The actor was put on ventilation support since Friday night after he faced breathing trouble and his heart beat became irregular. Doctors also had to postpone a surgery that was scheduled to be performed on him on Saturday in view of the deterioration in his health condition.
Ganguly had acted in several drama, TV serials and Bengali movies. Notable among them are films Mahulbanir Sereng, Goynar Baksho, Laptop, Autograph and TV serials Amodini, Abar Jokher Dhon and Jol Nupur.
