Siliguri, 15 July: AS many as five fuel tankers have been gutted in a fire at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) depot located opposite to New Jalpaiguri rail station this evening.

The fire broke out around 8.30 this evening in a fuel tanker parked in front of the depot and soon spread to four more stationed nearby. The fuel tankers, loaded with petrol / diesel, were waiting to move out for delivery to petrol pumps in and around Siliguri when the fire broke out.

Soon the fire took a devastating shape, making 20 fire-tenders rush to the site one by one. IOC pressed its own fire-fighting mechanism as well. As a precautionary measure, electricity department suspended power supply to the area.

Together they managed to put out the fire around 10 pm and avoided a major devastation at New Jalpaiguri area. But by then, the five fuel tankers had been charred completely.

The reason of fire is not known yet, but such fire incidents near the IOC depot at intervals has almost become a norm.
