Siliguri: FIVE persons, including three of a family, have died in a tragic road accident at Shamuktala in Alipurduar district.
The accident took place around noon today at Shamuktala’s Tentultala area on National Highway 31 that connects north Bengal to Assam.
Police have identified the deceased as Ajit Basumatari, Estar Basumatari, Amrit Basumatari, Roshni Brahamma and Vijay Sharma. They were residents of Satali village under Kalchini block and were going to attend a marriage reception at Kamakhyaguri again in Alipurduar district.
Sources said that Ajit Basumatari was a retired assistant sub-inspector of police.
They were traveling in a private car, which collided head-on with a sand-carrying lorry at Shamuktala’s Tentultala. The collision was so intense that the frontal part of the car got twisted and all the five in it died on the spot. The dead body of driver Vijay Sharma got stuck behind the twisted steering-wheel.
Seeing the accident, residents of the area rushed in and managed to intercept the killer lorry. The driver managed to escape. On being informed a team from Shamuktala police station came and sent the dead bodies to Alipurduar District Hospital for post-mortem.
