Kolkata: Lt Gen Anil Chauhan has taken over as the new commander of the Army’s Eastern Command, headquartered in Kolkata.

He has succeeded Lt Gen Naravane, who relinquished the chair on 31 August on being elevated as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff in New Delhi.

Lt Gen Chauhan is an officer who has already been decorated with Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

Incidentally, he did schooling from the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Eastern Command headquarters Fort William in Kolkata and then moved to the National Defence Academy in Pune.

Lt Gen Chauhan graduated from the Indian Military Academy in 1981 and got commissioned into 11th Gorkha Rifles’ 6th Battalion. He brings with him vast experience in both conventional and counter-insurgency operations.

All his command assignments have so far been either in Kashmir or the northeast. Prior to this latest posting, Lt Gen Chauhan was the director-general of military operations at the Army headquarters in New Delhi.
