Bolpur: Police have arrested a Bengal state committee leader of the Forward Bloc on charges of sanctioning dubious loans to the tune of several lakhs of rupees from a cooperative bank.
Rebati Ranjan Bhattacharya (70) was arrested from his residence at Birbhum’s Muhammadbazar area last night. On being produced in the district court at Suri today, he has been remanded in two days police custody.
During the Left Front rule till 2011, Bhattacharya was the chairman of the Birbhum District Central Cooperative Bank.
In 2013, after new Trinamool backed governing body took over the control of the cooperative bank, a complaint was lodged against the Forward Bloc leader for sanctioning loans several traders from Nalhati area without verification and collaterals.
Police have been probing the complaint all these years and finally arrested the Forward Bloc leader last night.
Nurul Islam, the Trinamool backed current chairman of the Birbhum District Central Cooperative Bank, said that till 2013, loans amounting to Rs 14-crore were sanctioned from 17 branches of the cooperative banks in all over Birbhum.
“Majority of the borrowers haven’t repaid the loan and the bank is unable to contact them as the addresses and identities furnished are fake. In many of the cases, Bhattacharya had himself sanctioned the loan without the consent of the bank staff,” he has alleged.
