Kolkata, 01 October: PROVING all speculations true, Forward Bloc (FB) MLA Udayan Guha has joined the Trinamool Congress.
West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee announced this at the Kolkata airport on Thursday afternoon on her return from New Delhi. Guha and the Bengal youth affairs minister Aroop Biswas were present by her side.
“Udayan Guha has joined Trinamool and to begin with, I have appointed him a secretary in the party. He is a very able organiser and we will make best use of him in north Bengal and south Bengal both,” Banerjee said.
Guha, an MLA from Dinahata in Cooch Behar and also the chairman of the Dinahata Municipality, is the son of late Kamal Guha, a noted Left leader who was a minister in both the Cabinets of Jyoti Basu and Buddhadev Bhattacharjee.
Fifty nine year old Guha, the face of FB in Bengal till the other day, had quit from all his posts in the Left party on 23 September citing his differences with state FB secretary Ashok Ghosh and other top leadership.
Since then there has been speculation that he might switch over to the Trinamool Congress as Guha had been seen having several closed door meetings with Trinamool leader and Bengal urban development minister Firhad Hakim in the past few months.
Guha was FB’s Cooch Behar district secretary and a member of the party’s state secretariat. He was angry with the state leadership for not effecting a change of guard in FB replacing Ashok Ghosh, who is very aged and frail.
Last week, he had convened a convention of FB supporters in Cooch Behar telling them that it was impossible for him to continue in FB anymore and he would have to look for some alternative.
With his leaving the FB, the party has suffered a major jolt, especially in north Bengal.
