Asansol: Four people have been crushed to death in sleep by a speeding lorry at Raniganj in West Burdwan district.
The mishap occurred in the wee hours today at Raniganj’s Amrasota village. The lorry was coming from Birbhum carrying stones. It was moving along National Highway 60 when the driver lost control Amrasota village and the lorry straightway rammed into a hutment located next to the highway.
Two teenage boys and two youths were fast asleep in the hutment when the lorry overturned on them and killed them on the spot. The deceased were identified as Rohit Kumar (19), Suraj Kumar (18), Satish Kumar (12) and Shishu Kumar (14). The first three were brothers; the fourth one was a cousin of theirs.
On getting information about the accident, a team from Raniganj police station came to the spot and retrieved the dead bodies from under the overturned lorry. The driver of the lorry managed to escape soon after the accident; police could only arrest his assistant. The killer lorry has been confiscated.
