Asansol / Diamond Harbour, 20 September: POLICE at Kalna in Burdwan district have arrested a teenage boy and are looking for three of his friends for the gang-rape of a minor girl from their village.
The incident took place a Simlon village at Kalna on 18 September evening when the girl, who studies in class VII, had gone to a fair in the neighbourhood with her parents.
As alleged, escaping the eyes of her parents, four teenage boys from the village lured the girl to an isolated place in the backyard of a local school and took turns to rape her.
On finding that she was missing, her family raised an alarm. It was then that along with other villagers, the family members rescued her in a bleeding state from the backyard of the school. The minor girl was then admitted to the Kalna Subdivisional Hospital, where she is still undergoing treatment.
Her family lodged an FIR at Kalna police station yesterday naming four teenage boys who raped her. The police have now arrested one of the accused, while the rest three are absconding.
In a separate incident, another girl studying in the VII standard tried to commit suicide yesterday after allegedly being gang-raped by three youths known to her at Jairamkhali village at Canning in South 24-Parganas district.
In the FIR lodged by her family, it has been alleged that the girl had gone to a village fair on 14 September when the three youths from the neighbourhood lured her to a playground and raped her.
She returned home in a devastated state and narrated her ordeal to family members. Instead of reporting the matter to police fearing for family’s image, they then lodged a complaint to the village panchayat and it was subsequently decided that the three youths would be called in for a closed door trial on 18 September evening.
But instead of turning up for the trial, family of the three accused youths fled the village locking their houses under lock and key. The victim girl drank poison that night itself and she was rushed to the Canning Subdivisional Hospital in a critical state.
She is now out of danger but is still under trauma. Her family today lodged an FIR with police naming the three youths for the gang-rape.
