Kolkata: CID has arrested the husband of former Bengal cadre IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, who is on the run since February this year after being named in an extortion case.
MAV Raju, Ghosh’s husband, who happens to be the general manager of Calcutta Stock Exchange, has been arrested for assets allegedly disproportionate to income and being party to the extortion racket of his wife.
Raju had secured an anticipatory bail from the High Court for a month from 15 February and this was subsequently extended on his appeal. Recently, the CID filed the charge-sheet in the case at Midnapore court claiming evidence against Ghosh, Raju, and others.
This made Raju move the High Court today for a further extension of the anticipatory bail. CID’s counsel contested this saying that they need to interrogate him to further the investigation. Justice Sanjib Banerjee then rejected Raju’s bail plea.
Soon after this, CID sleuths arrested Raju from the High Court premises itself and took him to CID headquarters Bhawani Bhawan.
It may be noted that CID had raided Raju’s apartment at Naktala in the first week of February and had seized a sizeable amount of cash and several land titles.
The raid was conducted in connection with an FIR lodged by a jeweler at Daspur police station in West Midnapore district accusing Bharati Ghosh of extorting gold jewelry from him in 2016. Ghosh was then the SP of West Midnapore district.
