Kolkata: A young girl has died of dengue in a private tertiary care hospital in Kolkata.
The girl, Mamani Das, 24, was admitted to the private hospital on EM Bypass in the city on 3 September. She had a high fever and body ache.
Finding her condition fragile, the doctors at once put her in the intensive care unit and put her on life support. She underwent a dialysis yesterday 5 September.
Despite this, her condition began to deteriorate and from yesterday night she started betraying symptoms of multi-organ failure. Finally, around noon today, the girl breathed her last.
The hospital has in the death certificate attributed multi-organ failure and expanded dengue syndrome as the causes of her demise.
The deceased girl hailed from Narayanpur in North 24-Parganas, which is not very far from the Kolkata airport. The area comes under Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.
This comes on a day Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the health portfolio, told the Assembly that 17 people have so far died of dengue in the state this season. Out them, 13 died in government hospitals and three in private hospitals.
“The situation is grave and we are maintaining strict vigil. We are taking all necessary steps to arrest the spread of dengue,” she said.
Deputy health minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said later supplemented the Chief Minister adding that people in Nadia and North 24-Parganas are mostly getting afflicted by dengue. In North 24-Parganas alone, 5,479 people are suffering from dengue.
