Kolkata: Facing an intensified protest by the students, Presidency University has revoked the suspension of three students who had locked the varsity gate in September last year as part of an agitation.
The development comes after a meeting between Vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia and the agitating students at the university’s main campus at College Street this evening (24 January).
Presidency University had in December suspended three students for six months and issued warning to 18 students for participating in a student agitation in September wherein the main gate of the varsity was locked out.
Trouble began after the suspension was implemented on 2 January. Seven students, including the three suspended, sat on a hunger fast in front of the VC’s chamber from last week.
With the varsity showing no signs of relenting, a sizeable number of students resorted to a gherao of the VC from Wednesday (23 January) noon.
This continued overnight and, today the agitating students announced that they will continue the gherao until the suspension is repealed.
Under pressure, the VC finally sat for a meeting with the agitating students, where she said that the suspension can be lifted only if the three students admit that locking out the varsity gate was wrong.
The agitating students accepted the condition and, the three students expressed regret to the VC for the gesture in September. The VC then announced that the suspension has been revoked.
Soon after the announcement, the students burst into cheers and, called off their gherao agitation.
