Kolkata: Much to the relief of the people living in and around Behala in south Kolkata, a new railway level crossing gate has been commissioned between New Alipore and Majerhat stations today.
This new level crossing gate is located at a short distance from Majerhat road over-bridge that crashed on 4 September leading to the death of four people.
The level crossing gate was proposed by the state government as the collapse of the bridge severed the direct road connectivity between Behala and central Kolkata.
To ensure that the level crossing gate facilitates maximum benefit to road travellers, Eastern Railway has cancelled the services of as many as 18 EMU local trains that ply on the Sealdah-Budge Budge section.
The remaining 52 EMU trains on the route will, however, continue to run with some changes in their schedule.
