Siliguri, 03 March: THE Jalpaiguri infant trafficking case has taken a new turn with the CID this evening arresting two officers of the state government responsible for child projection and welfare.
Mrinal Ghosh, the Darjeeling district child protection officer, and Debasish Chanda, member of the Jalpaiguri Child Welfare Committee, were arrested after a marathon interrogation by CID investigators at Pintail Village in Siliguri through the day.
Ghosh’s wife, Sasmita Ghosh, who happens to be the Jalpaiguri district child protection officer, was also questioned at Pintail village. But she has been allowed to walk out as law prohibits arresting a woman after dusk except in exceptional circumstances. CID sources said that she might be arrested tomorrow.
Both of the couple was issued show-cause notices by their respective district magistrate for flouting norms and oversight in duties as regards functioning of Bimala Sishu Griha children home at Jalpaiguri accused of running an infant trafficking racket.
The trio had allegedly helped Chandana Chakraborty, chairperson of Bimala Sishu Griha. Chakraborty and her aid, BJP leader Juhi Choudhury, are already under arrest. But this is the first instance of government officials been arrested in the case.
Arrested Ghosh, and Chanda would be produced before the Jalpaiguri district court tomorrow. CID sources said that they would pray the court for their remand. This is to interrogate them face to face with Chakraborty and Choudhury, who are now in CID custody.
