Kolkata: City-headquartered Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has equipped itself with a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Lab (VRL) wherein it can now create 3D models for new ships before starting the production.
The VRL has been housed in GRSE’s central design office at Garden Reach in Kolkata.
Ajay Kumar, secretary of defence production in the defence ministry, inaugurated the facility recently. Vijayendra, joint secretary (naval systems) of defence production, and GRSE’s chairman-cum-managing director, Rear Admiral (Retd) VK Saxena, were present among other dignitaries.
Getting a ship design approved by the end user and make the production teams understand the nuances of the design are challenging tasks in a shipbuilding process. This often requires fast, reliable, and accurate resolution of issues flagged by the production branch or the vendor.
GRSE officials said that the VRL will facilitate fast analyses of issues in the design phase with the use 3-D models in a virtual environment. This, in turn, will facilitate faster approval from the end users and better resource management.
