Siliguri: CID has filed a chargesheet in the assassination case of sub-inspector Amitava Malik who was shot dead allegedly by Bimal Gurung supporters at Limbu Bustee off Darjeeling town during the Gorkhaland agitation last year.
Although police had named Gurung in the FIR as one of the accused, the chargesheet does not have his name.
Malik was shot dead on 13 October last year during a raid on Gurung’s hideout and police later arrested four of the accused namely, Suraj Pradhan, Shyam Kami, Mahendra Kami, and Dewraj Lepcha. Gurung has been in hiding and still out of bound.
Going by the legal stipulation that mandates the filing of charge-sheet within 90 days of arrest in case of cognisable offence, CID today filed the charge-sheet at the Darjeeling District Court. The chargesheet has names of all the four arrested but not Gurung who was also an accused named in the FIR.
CID sources said that investigation into the assassination is still on and there is a scope for filing supplementary chargesheet at a later stage. If further probe establishes Gurung’s direct or indirect role in the killing of the young police officer, he will be named in the supplementary chargesheet.
