Kalyani / Siliguri, 01 October: WEST Bengal Governor has put on hold the resignation of Kalyani University vice-chancellor Rattan Lal Hangloo who faxed his resignation on Thursday morning after being confined overnight by a group of agitating students.

Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee has also come out in support of the V-C saying that students shall have to pursue their demands through dialogue and unruly agitation would not be tolerated in educational campus.

The students had confined Hangloo and other senior teachers and non-teaching staff of the state university in Nadia to the V-C’s chamber from around 12 noon on Wednesday demanding a rollback in fee hiked for post graduate courses. They could come out only on Thursday morning.

Raj Bavan sources said that on receiving the resignation of the V-C, they immediately got in touch with Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi who is in Agartala now. Following this, Tripathi called up Hangloo asking him to continue until his return to Kolkata on Friday.

Tripathi went to Agartala to take over the additional charge as Governor of Tripura on Wednesday. This is because Thathagata Roy, the Governor of Tripura is on leave until 03 October.

Sources said the Governor has given the Kalyani University V-C time for a meeting at Raj Bhavan on Friday afternoon.

Hangloo told reporters on Thursday morning that he had got information a few days in advance that some people with vested interests would organise an agitation to dislodge him.

“Thus despite we setting a panel to talk to the students over their demands, they continued with the unruly agitation and confinement since Wednesday. Since, the students shouted slogan calling for my resignation, I have put in my paper,” he said.

Some senior teachers and non-teaching staff of the varsity have also offered to resign in solidarity with their V-C.
