Kolkata, 10 April: CALCUTTA High Court has extended the stay on tree felling at Lataguri forest adjacent to Gorumara National Park in north Bengal by another two days.
The division bench of acting Chief Justice Nishita Nirmal Mhatre and justice Topobrata Chakraborty today extended the stay until 12 April, while referring the matter to the National Green Tribunal. NGT’s eastern zone bench in Kolkata is scheduled to take up the matter tomorrow 11 April.
Acting on a petition from some NGOs, the HC had earlier on 07 April directed the state government not to fell anymore trees for a proposed flyover on National Highway 31 at Lataguri until 10 April.
During the hearing today, dispute cropped up as regards the actual number of tress that had been felled at Lataguri until 07 April. Counsel of the petitioners alleged that already some 2,500-3,000 trees had been chopped off by the government; the state’s counsel claimed that the number was much less than that.
On hearing both the sides, the division bench referred the matter to NGT and extended the stay of tree felling until 12 April so that the NGT could take up the matter by then.
