Asansol: Calcutta High Court has directed the police to register an FIR against Trinamool’s Asansol Mayor Jitendra Tiwari within seven days.
The directive has been issued today in response to a petition by BJP West Burdwan district president Laxman Ghorui, who was attacked in front of Asansol SDPO office on 7 April when he went to file nomination papers for the Panchayat polls.
Ghorui had suffered cut injuries in his hand and lodged a complaint at Durgapur police station the next day saying that a gang led by Tiwari had attacked him. But with the Trinamool Mayor being in the list of accused, police did not register an FIR on the basis of the complaint.
Ghorui then moved the Calcutta High Court on 30 April seeking a redress. Taking up the case today the HC asked the Durgapur police to register an FIR against Tiwari by next Tuesday and furnish a status report on the investigation to the court.
Reacting to the HC order, Tiwari alleged that Union minister and Asansol BJP MP Babul Supriyo is behind this.
“He is doing this save his before the Prime Minister and make it appear that BJP lost in the Panchayat polls here because of violence. The fact, however, is that BJP has no support base here. Supriyo had won in 2014 by a fluke but the same will never repeat in 2019 Lok Sabha polls,” he maintained.
Tiwari said that let the police register FIR against him, he will cooperate with the investigation.
