Kalyani, 29 May: HYPERACTIVE development activities seem to have little care for the legends, who had shaped India into a secular democracy!
While working on the expansion of National Highway 34 that connects Kolkata to north Bengal, workers engaged by a private contractor has recently unceremoniously removed a statute of Mahatma Gandhi that stood by the highway at Nakasipara in Nadia district.
That’s not all! The removed statue was thrown into the debris near a roadside ditch at Nakasipara’s Bethuadahari area. It remained there until today noon when on receiving complaints from residents, the BDO Nakasipara came and lifted away the statue of the Father of the Nation.
The administration was compelled to express regret over the callousness of the road workers and their supervisors and have assured to reinstate the statue at some other prominent place at Nakasaipara with due honour. The cost incurred in this would be realised from the private contractor.
Until the restoration, the statue of Gandhi-ji would remain in the safe custody of the BDO.
